I did receive my notification letter from VW of America yesterday.
I neglected to note the Campaign number - I'll update with that later. It was dated 10/30/2009, and indicated my VIN was included. (Mine is a 2003, but it is on "the other side of the 2003 VIN split" with the 2002s. Build date 6/2002) Hopefully some of you that are experiencing coil failures can get a favorable solution. Also included was the usual claim form for reimbursement if you had failures that you paid for yourself. There is also talk of this on PW. UPDATED - I received the second letter today, stating that dealers had coils in stock to start the recall campaign. (All eight of mine were replaced a week ago, along with new plugs) Edited by BlueSteW8 - 16-Dec-2009 at 20:08 |

Have the same number as you. Should I still go to the dealer if I never had any issues? |

I would go to the dealer (or at least contact them for an appointment).
Any recalls should be addressed asap, to protect your investment. That way you can also have the VIN run for any other open items - like heatshields, gas tank filler neck, seat heaters, etc. |

Hi,
Yesterday in mailbox I had letter from VW: Subject: Upcoming Voluntary Emissions Service Action 28F3/P1 Ignition Coil Inspection/Replacement It says that my VIN # is one of these vehicles which may need replacement but they ask to wait (if we do not have any problems with coil)until we recive our compaign notification letter. I replaced 2 coils 2 months ago and my questins is if bed coils could couse problems to any parts in my car ( my termostate not working and it started in the same time when coils failed)? I've moved like 3 times don't think I'm getting updates on recalls anymore.
Anyway to run the vin yourself. P.S. I doubt coil packs would have affected your tstat in anyway. Edited by yesimalex - 08-Nov-2009 at 20:30 |

Correct bad coil packs will only affect your spark. Nothing else. VW will pay for the 2 coil packs and labor if they were not previously covered.

I'm torn as my coils have worked flawlessly. I like to keep my car out of VW's hands as often as I can.

Tom, did you even get a recall letter? IIRC yours is a late model (2004.5) 2004, and may be outside of the recall anyway. I'm not even sure if they are planning on replacing every coil on every car. I do know that my car had all eight replaced previously, and latter had one of those replaced along with a sparkplug. All before I owned it. I'll query my Service Advisor when I get my car back for the oil seal leak/ coolant leak warranty claim. |
