I've heard of Unitronic, but I don't know anybody running their files period, much less the W8 file.

Looks like Unitronic has 18hp chip. They appear to be located near Montreal but I don't see any dealer network. They also don't list a price.

The problem with chipping the car, at least here in the UK, is that it would invalidate the insurance. I asked my insurers and they didn't want to know so I probably won't bother.

Anyone over here know of an insurer that will do it?

Yes but if you do anything to a car to make it nonstandard it can invalidate the insurance. Even nonstandard springs and dampers could do it, let alone anything that increases power.

I wasn't worried about the insurance company as much as the vw warranty.

Because of that I got my chip socketed and I carry all the tools and the old chip. If I ever needed to get towed to the dealer (or in your case needed to have an insurance claim) I could swap the chip out and the only way to tell would be to open the ECU box itself.

good luck

Mines flashloaded - I have the handheld unit, and the "stock" file on it.
Granted, it can be detected - but it was not an issue for me recently.

With my B5 I had a second ECU until the K04 was installed. BY then the car was out of warranty so I didn't care.

Well I spoke with SRS and they recommended Unitronic. Apparanetly they have done some work on W8s including looking at exhaust mods along with chipping. So it looks like I will be taking the plunge on July 7th for an install or flash. I hope it's worth it.
