My passenger side HID light works intermittently.

Sometimes when the car is running, and I notice the light is out, if I tap the headlight, it will come on instantly. Then later it will go out again.

So I'm thinking there is a short somewhere.

Hoping it's not in the wire bundle from the ballast to the bulb, requiring a new ballast. Anybody know if there are any other "control wires" in the housing, like going into the ballast, that could cause this? I mean, like whatever wire signals the light to turn on.

I can check all the wiring, but it's such a big deal to take off the bumper cover and remove the headlight to work on it that I want to be as prepared as possible before I tear into it. Would rather not have the car sitting apart for weeks while I research or have to order parts.

Yeah, there is a little bundle of wires within the headlight housing, including the feeder for the ballast which comes back outside of the housing through a grommet to get to the ballast. So it's possible you've got a loose wire in there somewhere.

Sounds like a loose wire. These ballasts are very sensitive to low voltage.

If it was me I would visit my local dealer and pick the service manager's brain as to what have they seen in Passat headlights on the blink. They may have alot of experience with it and can tell you exactly what is wrong. That way you can determine if you want to tackle it yourself.

HID only came on the W8, so unlikely to find a dealer with experience at this point.
