I'm a new W8 owner and I love it! It's hard to find these kind of cars down here so I had to fly to Iowa and drive it 1,353 miles back home. It is a one owner car with a clean Car Fax and 75,258 original miles. It has never been wreaked and had all the service records. The asking price was $9,875 but I got it for $7,000 after getting a break for my travel expenses.

The car is perfect other than the fuel gauge doesn't work. I had a very fun drive back and this is my first AWD car and it's great. It is a W8 Sport which means that it is a 6 speed and has the 17" wheels. I plan to put 19x9.5" Miro 111 wheels and an ST coil-over kit (thanks sdavis!). I also plan to put on a full Votex ground effects body kit as soon as I can find one. Lastly, a double DIN touch screen CD/DVD with reverse camera.

It's a very nice car, and you certainly got a great deal on it. Now, be a good W8 owner and make SURE you stay on top of the oil changes. The Achilles' heel of these cars are the hydraulic cam adjusters, which get gummed up when the oil isn't changed frequently enough or the wrong grade and/or brand is used.

You'll want to dig around in the archives on this forum, but in general you're looking at synthetic 0W40 or 5W40, changed religiously every 5,000 miles.

Also, my wheels looked exactly like yours when I bought my W8 and I had them redone like this:

Sure thing, will do. I'm kind of thinking that the 19" wheels/tires will affect the ride more than the struts.

(Once again) My set-up will be the EXACT same thing that Sean had on his car, so he can probably already give you an opinion.

Usually I buy MOMO wheels but his car just looked too good with those Miro wheels.

But you can get one for the oem head unit, and have control of the ipod/iphone through the head unit, and stream pandora or any other internet radio.

Yeah, once I get an after market deck then I will be doing that. However, with the factory head unit I have a fetish for factory parts to match.

I'm using a iPod adapter device from Dension (no, that's not a spelling error) that connects to the OEM HU and mimics the 6-disc changer. It works reasonably well. It provides an iPod dock interface as well as an AUX input, and auto-switches between them depending on which one is getting a signal.

My specific model isn't made anymore, but this appears to be its successor: %20 - http://www.dension.com/product/gateway-lite-bt-gbl3xxx

Or did they just install 1 out of 4 wrong? Most direction tires only go one one of two ways so it'd be impossible to have 3 wrong.

You were right. I thought it was three but it was only two. They just had to rotate the RR and LR and then they were correct. These are the tires on my refinished Madras, not the Miro wheels.

Couldn't you just turn it down in case of police? Can I ask how old you are, just out of curiosity?

According to his profile he's 43 but I'm not buying that, no offense haha. But I agree with Sean, you could definitely find a better use for the switch.

I really am 43 my first Volkswagen was a Super Beetle (hence my screen name) way back in the late 1980's and a then Rabbit GTI in 1990. I had a VW Polo in Europe while in the military and then a Jetta 16V when I got back home. I've had that car for 15 years and now the Passat. LOL, but I've always had a GM/GMC product as my daily driver.

This is my website:

Yes, I am open to suggestions for a better use of the switch, especially since most stereo units have a mute button.

The Votex parts aren't really that hard to find, it is the money that is hard to find!

The heat gun came in today, it was just in another box.

Now I just need a clear day to get to it. I'm going to try and roll the fenders, install the new brakes and paint the calipers all in one day. I have to clearance the front calipers for the wheels too. Then it's off to the VW dealer for the coil-overs and 19" wheels install.

Thanks again to srdavis for helping me with the specs and info.

I've gotten the wheels, tires and brakes installed and man does it STOP! I said before that it would stop on a dime now it will stop on a nickle (lol, I know a nickle is bigger than a dime).

The coil-overs aren't on yet, some of the bolts were seized and would break off. So, I have ordered new bolts (why didn't ST provide some?).

When I get it lowered I'll throw up a pic or two.

you're probably talking about the upper ball joint pinch bolt, common bolt to get seized. When I did mine first, those were seized, so I just unbolted the control arms from the inside, and it was fine. That pinch bolt can be a huge pain to get out.

Okay, a little bit 'cause it so hot here and a lot because I'm lazy, I've yet to roll my fenders and paint my calipers. Those two things I need to do so I can bring my car in for the dealer to install the coil-overs.

I'm going to California for a week (Bugorama VW Classic), when I get back the car will be priority number one to get this done.

So far everything about this "upgrade" has given me hell. Wheels didn't clear the brakes. Lost a tire on my first trip. Bolts for the struts were seized up. I'm just ready to get 'er done so I can enjoy the car again and I'm not even ready to take on the challenge of getting the Votex kit installed.

Where I live anything for an ATV, tractor or 4x4 Ford can be easily had and done but you tell them it's a European car and the answer is always no. It's easier to find someone to put shoes on a horse than it is to put brakes on a W8.

I'm not sure. I have yet to read that the radio has any kind of memory card or drive in it.

True, true and I want it to have a reverse camera too. I wonder how much it would cost to get that installed. I have done several stereo installs in the past but nothing this technical.

I think the cost will really come down to how hidden you want the wires. If you want them under carpet you will be looking at big bucks. But I don't think it should be too too bad if they go out the firewall and run the wires under the car.

They offer radios with CarPlay for half the price, why the $1,400? Running wires to the rear for a back up cam isn't hard at all. They don't need to go under the carpet or under the car, you can easily tuck them under the door sill trim pieces. The hardest part is getting the behind the seat, but it's all possible. The hardest part is just deciding how you want the camera mounted and actually mounting it.

The difference is, besides twice the price, one has a 7.1" screen and captive CD/DVD player and the other is a 6.1" screen with a visible disc player.

I would love to find it at a better price but of course I have to have the "flagship" model for my car.

Sean, I need your help please, my car was at the dealer again for the ST coil-over install. This time they had all of those bolts on hand in case any of them broke off. Well, he told me that is still can not get that top bolt to break loose. Could you please give me an exact detailed description of what you did to your car so I can pass it along to the tech. Any picture(s) would help too. He said something about the bolts on the W8 are facing the opposite way than non-W8 cars.

Let me get this straight, you took it to a VW dealership and they can't figure out how to take the suspension apart? It shouldn't be any different than any other Passat. I wish I was closer to you because it's really not that big of a deal. There's one top pinch bolt on the upright that is the traditional way to get it out. They normally get seized and required an air hammer to get out. If it doesn't come out, you can take the top 2 controls arms off from the top mount. It takes a while as there's not much room but that's how I did it the first few times on mine. Idk what else to really say.

He just keeps telling me that the top pinch bolt on the upright is in backwards. He said he has done this before on other B5 cars (none W8) and that all those cars the bolt faced the other way. He said he can't get to the bolt and it is seized up. I sent him this picture, is this how you say you did it?

Yeah, that's how I did mine. But really, if a mechanic at the dealership can't figure how to get a bolt, which commonly seizes on these cars, then you should ask for a different mechanic or go to a different dealership. Just because the bolt is in the other way doesn't mean it's an excuse for not being able to get it out. I can see how it might be more difficult but really, it's a joke that he can't figure out ho to get it out.

He probably is going to use an air hammer to hammer to bolt out, since it's in backwards, the air hammer has to come at it from the other side which there's not enough room for. Tell him to cut the head of the bolt off and knock it out like it was in the right way. No you don't have to take this bolt out to do this, but if he's already in there messing with it, might as well just get it over with.

Thanks. I will try to get a picture of my car to see what he has done so far. He did tell me about the air hammer and said he would like to avoid doing that to my car. It looks like that may have to be one of the options. It's not totally his fault because when he said "air chisel" to me, I said "no". He only will do what I approve and we did order a new bolt in case that one breaks off but I never did approve him to take the air hammer to it. I may just have no choice. Anyways, as always, I appreciate your skill and advice.

Nothing yet, I've been out of town. I am gonna, before I bring it back for the third time, pull a wheel off and get a picture and post here for Sean's feedback. If, after all that, it isn't done I'll be forced to try something else.

P.S. We did get the fenders rolled though

We are having a problem with getting this one bolt off, the upper control arm(s) bolt. I took the wheel off and got a picture. The bolt highlighted in yellow is what's the trouble. The tech says that he has never seen one this way, the nut and bolt head are backwards. He is experienced with the B5, even owning a B5.5 TDI Wagon. I also circled the two top arm bolts in red, I think this is how Sean did his car.

...to be clear, what I'm asking is, does that pinch bolt belong the other way around? The tech says it is backwards.

No one wants to take the responsibility of putting a hammer and torch to a "rare" car. It's not the dealership tech fault, it's mine because I never have approved the repair yet. I was waiting to do it the right way. However, now that I know that the right way requires a $700 tool, things will change.

And again, you can do it without removing that bolt. If you're that worried, then leave that bolt there and take out the other 2 you had circled in red.

Thanks Sean, yes that is what I will try, I just haven't went up to the dealer yet and talked to them about it. I do eventually want to get those arms on top changed to the custom ones that are adjustable. I have seen your picture on Vortex that even as low as your car is they aren't needed, so I hope I don't need them. I'll bring my car to the dealer sometime this week. I was actually in the Veterans hospital these past four days.
